Pack (01/07)
NT: So… Yeah, i’m still alive. And i’m back… with a little pack. I was, kinda, busy, then i was lazy, then busy again, and the cycle repeat a few times until the last couple of weeks when i was actually busy taking care of my little sister who just go back to school and haved to make sure she was ready every morning… it was horrible, i hate it, now i just want to go back to my University so i don’t have to do this again (guess what, this crap (this thing about the COVID-19) started like, one week before the date when i was supossed to go back to my University… great). Anyway… i ended up deciding to make a little pack to, well, compensate this last we-… this last months(?) of me, well, doing nothing (is not like i did nothing… i just didn’t do anything to this version). Enjoy.
「We have arrived」
The group was led by Mary to an area that was separated from the other side of the street by some concrete barricades. The interior was quite lively, and one couldn’t feel any trace of the uncomfortable depressing atmosphere that was felt on the streets they passed through earlier.
「This is Resistance’s headquarters」
At that moment, Yuki spread her arms and said, 「Welcome」, welcoming everyone. Unlike on the other side of the city, here one could see several Digders carrying heavy equipment from one lake to another, and next to the tents of what appeared to be a camp, members of Resistance could be seen carrying out tasks such as maintenance to their equipment while talking quietly with their colleagues.
It could also be hear some members of Resistance yelling, 「Hey, look, I’ve found it outside!」, with a cheery tone as they lifted up a piece of metal that at first glance seemed worthless.
Unlike the people on the other side of the city, the people who were here emitted a more hopeful aura and free from the heavy tension that could be felt in the rest of the city.
「Oh, but it’s Mary. Why don’t you come with me to explore for a while? I could work more calmly knowing that you are with me」
「Moron, that’s sexual harassment. You better go bother someone else」
「Hey, I didn’t mean to-… Oh? Were you here too, Yuki? Do you remember the metal you asked me for before?… It was copper, wasn’t it? Well, I found it」
「Awa! Thank you! With this I can repair the Digders that no longer work!」
The members of Resistance began to gather around Mary and Yuki, who began to speak to them in a friendly tone. Shortly after, Mary and Yuki, with a slight smile on their faces, said, 「This way」, as she beckons Takako and the others to follow her.
「You seem to be popular」
At first glance, it was clear that the other members of Resistance trusted Mary and Yuki a lot, which made Takako mutter those words with a smile.
「Well, it’s been 7 years since I joined Resistance… So everyone must remember my face by now. It is Yuki who truly has earned their trust with all the work she does」
「No, no, I just take care of the maintenance of the Digders and weapons so that everyone can continue fighting. It’s not like I did it to earn their trust or anything」
「Anyway, we all help each other to survive. That is why we are all good friends. If someone decided to betray others, and do as they please, we all would end up dying」
Takako showed a surprised look after hearing those words. That was because she believed that she was the type of person who preferred to do everything by herself.
「Many people could die due to the selfishness of a single person… This is why, although I don’t like it, I have decided to work together with everyone else. Even Yuki’s friend ended up… dying due to someone else’s selfishness… If you’re going to die, do it alone… instead of dragging other people with you because of your selfishness」
Mary’s gaze gradually grew more frustrating as she remembered what had happened.
「Yuki-san’s… friend?」
「We didn’t come to Earth together, but there wasn’t a big difference between the time we arrived, so we got along… errrm… was it a year and a half ago already? One of the members of the vanguard was cowed and ended up escaping from the combat, then my friend, who was fighting alongside that person…」
Hearing that, Krull winced in regret. Them, Yuki, who was puzzled by that, said, 「You don’t have to worry about that, it was a long time ago, seriously!」, a little alarmed as she urged the rest to continue.
「Besides, Mary-chan has a much harder past than mine… Mary-chan’s parents died too, you see」
Everyone felt uneasy after hearing those words.
「The people of Earth cannot fight for themselves, so they generally fill the role of supporting the rest. For that reason, just as Mary-chan said before… it is easy for them to die if someone ignores an order or an accident occurs」
After hearing Yuki’s words, the entire group was attacked by a feeling difficult to describe. Previously, Mary had said, 「It’s been 7 years since I joined Resistance」, and it was quite possible that this was the reason why Mary, who is already 14 years old, started fighting when she was that young. No one was able to say a single word after seeing how that girl, who had had to endure such a hard tragedy when she was so young, was still struggling with the hope of one day reclaiming the world.
「Ojiki! Are you here? I brought some guys you should know」
NT: Ojiki would be like, «Uncle», but said in a respectful way. Errrm, remember that the Japanese do not also use the terms «Uncle» and «Grandfather» among others to address strangers or acquaintances with whom they share a certain difference in age and the like.
The group entered into a tent, much larger than the others, to which Mary led them. The interior felt incredibly hot, and it was possible to hear the sound of metal being hit. Then, as soon as Mary raised her voice, to let the person inside know that they had arrived――
「Alright, I’m over here」
From the back of the tent, which was hidden behind a large wooden box that appeared to contain some supplies, the loud voice of a person who had begun to wave his hand while holding a hammer could be heard.
As Mary let out an indignant sigh, the man in the back of the store, who had a toned body, who also looked bigger than Takako, stopped hitting the huge sword, which looked clearly difficult to wield, with his hammer to temper it to go meet the group.
「Yo~, I see you brought them! So these guys are the new Heroes-sama … Nice to meet you!」
The muscular man approached the group while waving his hammer to greet them. The man had a wild bristly green hair, a direct gaze, which left no room for anyone to doubt him, and an overwhelmingly large body, and at first glance, it reminded them of the Uncles who worked in the civil works in Balman. In addition to the towel he wore around his neck, he also had simple pants and a cotton shirt, which made him look similar to what any farmer would look.
「First of all, you should introduce yourself, you geezer. It would be troublesome if you don’t do it now」
「Oh right, sorry! I am Balmung Moharosu! You can call me Balmung… I’m kind of like the Captain of Resistance. It is a pleasure to meet you!」
Everyone showed puzzled looks after hearing his words. Although he clearly looked strong, his carefree demeanor and simple appearance did not make him look like a Captain.
「He may not seem like it, but this geezer really is Resistance‘s Captain. Make sure to treat him with the proper respect」
「Well saided Mary. Now, how about you start showing me some more respect for yourself first?」
